koreanovela

i spent the weekend catching up on sleep and watching the dvd copies i bought of "my sassy girl" and "the classic" over at stef's. because my player can't seem to read my dvd copies. and stef is right. "the classic" is a classic love story. sure, certain scenes are reminiscent of "my sassy girl," like the part when ji-hae was waiting to open the box. or when she tried to avoid sang-min when they got caught in the rain. i guess you have to expect that when it comes from the same director. besides it was definitely one of the things we loved about "my sassy girl." but generally, "the classic" is far more a drama of romance than "my sassy girl" is. they're alike on the fact that they're love stories. but still they're different. just think of it this way, it's a love story with a lot of sap and unforgivable melodrama. and it's actually likeable. the mood throughout the film is subdued and very relaxed, that's why i hardly noticed the length of the film when i watched it. because it was relaxing to watch. and for someone who's as burned as i am, i guess i'll enjoy something like that so much because it's as good as a relaxing foam bath. with good music to match. it's going to be odd to compare the two films because i like them both. and i disagree with most critics who said that jo in-seong's portrayal of sang-min was lifeless. it was actually his non-commital acting that made their whole repertoire so gush-worthy. and whatever misgivings he had throughout the film, i could forgive him for just one scene. the part where he cried. he looked everything he needed to look like. happy, sad, melancholial, overwhelmed... it was actually in that part of the film when i truly felt my tear ducts working. so i can't hold prejudice against him. because if his acting was as lackluster as critics said, i wouldn't have been moved so much by the sight of a boy crying unexplainably. but then maybe i'm really just a closet romantic.
